How to Export Instagram
DMs and Chat History
Instagram has no Export Chat button, but Meta's Accounts Center will package every DM you have into a single download. This guide walks through the request, the three settings that decide whether the file is useful, and where each conversation ends up.
Instagram DMs hold a lot of relationship history, from the first reply to a story to years of daily conversation. Getting them out takes one request in Meta's Accounts Center and a short wait, after which you have a file that works with AI chat analysis.

How do you download your Instagram messages?
The steps below use the Instagram app. On a computer, open accountscenter.instagram.com and start from step 2; the screens are the same.
1Open Accounts Center from Instagram settings
Go to your profile, tap the menu icon (three lines) in the top-right corner, then Settings and activity. Tap Accounts Center at the top of the list.
2Go to Download your information
Tap Your information and permissions, then Download your information, then Download or transfer information.
3Choose your account and select Messages
Pick your Instagram profile (if you have several Meta accounts, only tick the one you want), choose Some of your information, tick Messages, and tap Next. Leaving everything else unticked keeps the download to messages only.
4Set the destination, date range, format, and media quality
Choose Download to device. Then set:
- Date range: All time. The default is one year, which silently drops older messages.
- Format: JSON for analysis tools. HTML is only for reading in a browser.
- Media quality: Low. Photos and videos are not needed for analysis and make the file huge.
Tap Create files and enter your password when asked.
5Download the ZIP when the email arrives
Instagram emails you when the file is ready. Small inboxes take minutes; large ones can take up to 48 hours. Open Available downloads in the same screen and download the ZIP within four days, or the link expires and you start over.

Where are the messages in the download?
The ZIP mirrors Instagram's data categories. Messages are a few folders deep, and every conversation has its own folder.

You can upload the whole ZIP to MosaicChats and choose the conversation afterwards, or dig out one message_1.json and upload just that. Chats with tens of thousands of messages are split into message_2.json, message_3.json, and so on.

If you turned on end-to-end encryption for a chat, it is stored on your device rather than on Meta's servers and will not be in this file. Accounts Center has a separate download for encrypted chats that generates a PIN to unlock the archive.

Frequently asked questions
Can the other person see that I downloaded my DMs?
No. Requesting a copy of your own information is private. Instagram notifies nobody else.
Does the download include messages I deleted?
No. Only messages still in your inbox when Instagram builds the file are included. Unsent messages, vanish-mode messages, and deleted conversations are gone.
Can I export a single conversation instead of everything?
Not from Instagram. The download always contains every conversation, but each one lives in its own folder under messages/inbox, so you can pick out the chat you want after extracting the ZIP.
Why does my download only go back one year?
The date range defaults to the last year. Set it to All time before you tap Create files, otherwise older messages are left out.
How do I find a specific conversation in the download?
Extract the ZIP and open your_instagram_activity, then messages, then inbox. Each conversation is a folder named after the other person's username followed by an ID. The messages are in message_1.json (and message_2.json and so on for very long chats).
What about end-to-end encrypted chats?
Chats you switched to end-to-end encryption are stored differently and are not part of this download. Instagram has a separate option in Accounts Center for encrypted chats that protects the file with a PIN.
